Wilson. A'ja Wilson is off the injury list per the picks file's injuries index for tonight. The Aces' MVP and interior anchor is available at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The Tempo host Las Vegas at 7 PM ET.
The reverse-injury news is Kelsey Plum. Plum has been listed Out for several games — the Aces' primary perimeter creator is not playing tonight. Vegas will run Chelsea Gray as the primary point guard with Jackie Young handling secondary ball duties. That is a Wilson-dominant offensive scheme without Plum's shot creation to keep opposing defenses honest at the perimeter.
The Tempo's injury picture. Sykes remains Out — still no announced return timeline. Fagbenle and Rice should be available per the recent injuries index pattern. The lineup Brondello runs tonight is likely Mabrey-Allemand-Conde-Sabally as the starters with the bench rotation stabilized around Fagbenle, Rice, and one of the smaller pieces.
Three things I am watching walking into tonight.
First. The Wilson matchup for Nyara Sabally.
Sabally has held her own against Wilson before this season (the June 25 home matchup where Toronto won by 28). That was a Wilson-limited-minutes game — she played somewhere in the 26-minute range per my count from the play-by-play. Tonight is Wilson at full minutes, which means Sabally needs 34-plus minutes of quality interior defense. She has been carrying that load through July and the fatigue question at this stage of the season is real.
If Sabally holds Wilson to her per-game average (approximately 26 points), the Tempo can win a close game. If Wilson goes for 30-plus, the offense has to keep up and that requires Mabrey to score in the 25-plus range against Chelsea Gray's on-ball defense.
Second. Chelsea Gray at point without Plum next to her.
Gray as the primary ball-handler without Plum's off-ball threat has been the Aces' bench structure historically. Their starting lineup this year has typically had Plum handling primary and Gray running the offense in second-unit stretches. Tonight Gray is the starter and the primary ball-handler for extended minutes. She is an elite passer and a proven playoff performer, but her scoring output has not been at 2022-2023 levels this season.
Toronto's perimeter defense against Gray is Sykes usually. Without Sykes, the primary Gray defender is Mabrey (a downgrade defensively) or a switching scheme that hides Mabrey off-ball. The matchup favors Gray to create for Wilson and Young; whether she can score enough herself to punish the Mabrey mismatch is the individual game within the game.
Third. The Mabrey load without Sykes.
The Tempo have been playing shorthanded without Sykes for three-plus weeks. Mabrey has been carrying the primary perimeter scoring role while also handling on-ball defense against opposing wings when the matchup demands it. Her per-game minutes have been climbing, her shot volume has been climbing, and the efficiency has been variable.
Tonight is Wilson-plus-Gray-plus-Young on offense — a lot of playmaking, three quality scorers, and Wilson's interior gravity that pulls Toronto defenders into the paint. If the Tempo's defensive scheme gets stretched by Vegas' three-scorer alignment, Mabrey ends up playing on-ball defense on Gray while trying to produce 25-plus points offensively. That is a lot to ask.
What the framework says.
Maya's piece this morning has the spread as a PASS (MODEST tier, no elevated bot HIGH on the spread — the HIGH pick tonight is a TOTAL, which is unusual). The framework does not size the Tempo spread. The Tempo Report reads this as a coin-flip game where the Aces have the healthier core scorers and the Tempo have the home crowd and interior toughness.
The playoff picture. The Tempo are 13-10. A win tonight puts them at 14-10 with a signature victory over a playoff-caliber opponent, which would be the second such win of the season (the June 25 blowout of Vegas being the first). A loss puts them at 13-11 and asks whether the team has enough offensive firepower without Sykes to compete with the league's better rosters.
What I am watching specifically.
The first six minutes. If the Tempo come out with Sabally getting clean post entries against Wilson and Mabrey hitting catch-and-shoot threes coming off Allemand pick-and-rolls, the pace and tone favor a Tempo win. If Vegas comes out with Wilson dominating the interior and Gray finding open shooters on kick-outs, the game gets uncomfortable fast.
The Fagbenle rotation. If Fagbenle can play 20-plus quality minutes against Wilson, the Tempo have a real second interior defender to lean on. If she is limited to 10-12 minutes, Sabally has to play through fatigue.
The clutch minutes. Vegas is a top-three clutch team this season. The Tempo have been struggling in clutch situations without Sykes. If this game is within five with five minutes left, the structural advantage swings toward the Aces.
Tip 7 PM ET. WNBA League Pass. ION in the US. The Tempo Report will recap tomorrow morning. Tonight is the kind of test the second half of the season is built on.
